On Friday night (Aug. 28, 2026) in Arena Mexico, CMLL featured special guests from AEW and Stardom as well as an 8-man tag team bout with Mistico to hype the 93rd Anniversary event in September.
Eddie Kingston represented AEW in his CMLL debut to challenge Hechicero for the world heavyweight championship in the main event of the evening. The Mad King wrestled with aggression. Hechicero’s wizardry on the mat rolled Kingston in circles for the winning pin.
The reaction online was not positive for this
bout. Critics of Kingston called it a stinker, albeit in a harsher tone. Others chimed in to say it wasn’t as bad as some exaggerated claims. Luchablog offered a more level-headed view on the match.
Rob Viper, who is a passionate voice in the lucha libre community, panned the match.
Stardom defeated CMLL in a trios showcase. Maika, Mei Seira, & Ema Maishima triumphed over Lluvia, Zeuxis, & Dark Silueta when Seira scored a roll-up on Silueta. Lots of good highlights in this video package.
The main event for the 93rd Anniversary show will be a four-way tag team bout. The winners advance to mask versus hair, in whichever manner it fits accordingly to the participants. On Friday night, there was an atomicos 8-man tag bout as a preview to the Anniversary. Mistico, Templario, Star Jr. & Dragon Rojo Jr. defeated Averno, Ultimo Guerrero, Zandokan Jr., & Barbaro Cavernario when Templario landed a handspring moonsault leaping from the ramp over the ropes onto Ultimo Guerrero.
Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja will defend the CMLL world tag titles in a four-way bout at the Anniversary. On Friday, Los Villanos were the first qualifiers by beating Los Gemelos Diablos and the sons of Blue Panther. The Villanos used smart tactics for a moonsault outside onto the pile, and that cleared the coast for a clean pin off an avalanche bomb in the ring.
In other notes, voting is up on the CMLL website (here) to choose challengers for Night of Champions on September 25. CMLL announced NJPW and Stardom talent Syuri, Sho, Douki, Master Wato, Yoh, Kushida, Francesco Akira, Taiji Ishimori, El Desperado, Shota Umino, Zack Sabre Jr., and Yota Tsuji for the Lucha Kingdom event in Arena Mexico on November 16.
