Former Barcelona star Jordi Alba has announced he will join Sergio Busquets in retiring from football at the end of the MLS season.
The two former Barcelona stars are currently with Lionel Messi and Luis
Suarez at Inter Miami but will call it a day when the current campaign ends.
Alba had signed a contract until 2027 with Inter Miami earlier this year, and so had been expected to continue, but has had a change of heart and has explained his decision in a post on social media.
“Hello everyone, the time has come to close a momentous stage in my life. I have made the decision to end my career as a professional footballer at the end of this season. I do so with absolute conviction, fulfillment, and happiness,” he says.
The full-back does also have some kind words for Barcelona, the Spain team and the fans.
“To FC Barcelona, the club of my life, the one that saw me grow up as a child and allowed me to reach the pinnacle of my career, live more than an unforgettable decade, and win every title possible. To the Spanish national team, proud to have worn this jersey and grateful to be part of your history. And finally, to Inter Miami, thank you for opening your doors to me, welcoming me with love, and giving me the opportunity to complete this journey by enjoying it every last moment.
“Thanks to all the fans for your love. You taught me that the jersey isn’t just worn, it’s felt. Thanks to my parents and my brother, for being by my side every step of the way since I was a child.
“For all the efforts you made to make my dream come true. This is also yours. I love you very much.”
Alba retires after a stellar career that brought six La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey crowns and the Champions League. He also claimed a Euro title and the Nations League with Spain and won 93 caps during his international career.
Thanks for everything, Jordi Alba.
