Two scintillating bottom-corner goals headlined Harry Kane’s super performance for Bayern Munich in a 3-1 Champions League victory over Premier League giants Chelsea — but the English striker is so much more than a goal-scorer for the German record champions.
“I don’t have much to say about the things everyone can see. What I can say is: watch his work off the ball,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany enthused after the match, as captured via @iMiaSanMia. “Watch him press, help the team, recover the ball.
It’s important for him, if he spends that much energy, to get rewarded and get chances to score. We can talk about talent and quality, but I keep highlighting that side because you need a lot of hard work to be where he is.”
Kane really makes it look easy at times but a game like this — which did feature missed golden opportunities for Kane and his teammates — is a reminder that it really is not. But the good work that Kane puts in, whether that is in the opponent box or dropping deep into his own, or even away from the ball and the focus of the cameras, is helping carry the Bavarians to greater and greater success.
Bayern Munich hosted Chelsea in one of the most intriguing matchups on the second round of Matchday 1 in the Champions League’s League Phase.
The Bavarians were able to tough out a rugged 3-1 victory in a match that was not all that pleasing to the eye. Harry Kane’s brace and an own goal from Chelsea paced Bayern Munich. While Chelsea did some good things (including a terrific first half counterattack for a goal), the Londoners did not have enough gas in the tank to keep up with the German powerhouse.
