There’s no rest for the wicked… especially if you’re a world-class striker for Bayern Munich and England like Harry Kane. Puns and joking matters aside, the extended international break continues. For England, they face another tricky away test in the UEFA Nations League, this time taking on Croatia in Rijeka.
The Three Lions are coming off a 2-0 win over Czechia in Prague after their first match ended in a 3-2 loss to Spain at Wembley. Thomas Tuchel will be looking to get another win under his belt
before concluding the international break next week against Czechia at Wembley. Of course, Tuchel has had to deal with injuries to the likes of Nico O’Reilly and Ezri Konsa during the break, while Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, and Tino Livramento were all unable to join the national team due to injury—players Tuchel would have otherwise included in the squad.
As for Kane, he has started and played in both of England’s matches thus far, scoring twice—once against Spain and once against Czechia. He played 71 minutes in Prague and 83 minutes at Wembley, but it doesn’t look like he will be rested against Croatia.
In the press conference ahead of England’s match against Croatia, Tuchel confirmed that the England skipper has no plans to rest.
“Harry wants to play and he will. The players just want to go again because they have a three-day turnaround in between matches. A match can be so different – the match against Spain was the highest intensity in the output of some players. The match against ten men [Czechia] was a totally different story. We took care of some players after 70 minutes. It becomes a totally different story. So Harry is good to go,” Tuchel told reporters in his press conference (Mirror vis @iMiaSanMia).
There’s certainly the option of starting Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is in decent form for Leeds United, especially since he was an unused sub in the 2-0 win over Czechia. However, as Tuchel alluded to, all indications point toward Kane wanting to start from the get-go, perhaps taking some comfort in the fact that he was able to come off in the 70th minute in Prague with the team already up 2-0 against 10 men.
