Former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, released his first statement in the wake of his fatal car wreck late last month in Nigeria, one that claimed the lives of close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. The car Joshua was traveling in collided with a parked truck; however, “AJ” only suffered minor injuries.
The unlicensed driver is facing multiple criminal charges.
“Thank you for all the love and care you have shown my brothers,” Joshua wrote on X. “I didn’t even realize how special
they are. I’ll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men. 100 percent it’s tough for me, but I know it’s even tougher for their parents. I have a strong mind, and I believe God knows their hearts. May God have mercy on my brothers.”
Joshua, who was in Nigeria to visit family, has since returned to the UK.
The vehicle was reportedly traveling “beyond the speed limit.”
The 36 year-old Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) is fresh off his sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami. “AJ” was planning to make his “sweet science” return in early 2026; however, a family member is now claiming that Joshua has retired from boxing after the tragic accident in Nigeria.
Time will tell.
