Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would ever have the kind of whirlwind story about a practice-squad-level, developmental tight end as we have with Dae’Quan Wright. If you haven’t been following up on this potential “history” making process, let’s get you caught up real quick:
- The Cleveland Browns added Wright in mid-August after the Philadelphia Eagles waived him
- One of our loyal DBN readers was very excited about the Wright addition and shared about it in The Feed:
- Wright was mostly away from the Browns for the first week he was on the roster, then came news that he was part of a lawsuit attempting to return to college
- Cleveland then waived Wright, which opened up his chance to return to college
- Given his plan to return to school, no other NFL team claimed Wright
- Lawsuits went back and forth, including the SEC making it a rule that schools would face punishment if they rostered players who had declared for and/or signed a professional contract. Another lawsuit said that wasn’t acceptable. Then most of us got lost in the legalese of it all
- Wright and Zxavian Harris were not placed on LSU’s roster for their game against Clemson, despite reportedly enrolling and practicing
The seemingly final update on Wright’s journey with LSU is that he will not have a journey with LSU:
So, Wright now has two options: Find another school with a scholarship and/or NIL money or seek to return to the NFL, likely on a practice squad. Wright is currently an NFL free agent after clearing waives, free to sign with any team if they so desired.
Given the Browns flexibility with Wright as he went through his process, including allowing him to be away from the team despite being on the roster, it is at least possible that GM Andrew Berry would look to bring the former Ole Miss tight end back into the fold. We know Berry isn’t afraid of making a few extra roster moves.
Cleveland fans, on the other hand, may just be sick of hearing about a player who went undrafted and whose best statistical season included 39 receptions, 635 yards, and five touchdowns. Then again, an athletic 6’4”, 255-pound tight end is always an enticing option.
