Even in the games they ended up winning, the Yankees haven’t had a ton of relaxed games recently, but that’s what they had Tuesday night against the Royals. Led by an Amed Rosario home run, the Yankees jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning and kept the offense going from there. Meanwhile on the mound, Cam Schlittler did Cam Schlittler things, allowing one run in six innings. The comfortable lead led to the Yankees getting to face a position player pitcher and having a drama-free night at the ballpark
with a 15-1 win.
With the Yankees having a fairly easy go of things, were they able to gain any ground on teams around the American League? Let’s check in on Tuesday night’s action in today’s edition of the Rivalry Roundup.
Baltimore Orioles (25-30) 6, Tampa Bay Rays (34-18) 1
The Orioles gave the Yankees another helping hand on Tuesday as a good outing from former Ray and current Oriole Shane Baz helped Baltimore to pick up a win.
Tampa Bay got the game off to a pretty good start, as they picked up hits in two of the first three at-bats, leading to Chandler Simpson scoring on a Jonathan Aranda single. However, despite out-hitting the Orioles 9-7 and getting plenty of chances, that ended up being the only run they scored on the night. Facing his former team, Baz went seven innings, allowing just that one run, while striking out nine batters.
The Orioles took the lead in the bottom of the second, putting up a three-spot, but the big damage came in the fifth. There, Baltimore scored another three runs on a rocket of a home run from Samuel Basallo. That blast gave Baltimore full control of the game, and Tampa Bay never really answered after that.
Other Games
- Washington Nationals (29-27) 6, Cleveland Guardians (32-35) 3: The Guardians managed just one run in six innings off Cade Cavalli, leaving their ninth inning rally attempt not close enough. Washington did most of their offensive work in the second inning, putting up four runs, including a James Woods’ homer. That put them in control, which they maintained for the rest of the game.
- Toronto Blue Jays (26-29) 8, Miami Marlins (26-30) 1: This game was close for a while, but the Blue Jays eventually got to Sandy Alcantara, putting up six runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Marlins. The game was just 2-1 going into the sixth, but Toronto batted around in the frame, with Jesús Sánchez putting the finishing touches on with a grand slam.
- Texas Rangers (25-29) 10, Houston Astros (24-32) 7: A night after getting no-hit, the Rangers ensured that didn’t happen again, putting up a massive first inning. That being said, even after jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Rangers had some nervy moments down the stretch before eventually putting away the Astros. Texas was all over Houston starter Jason Alexander, who did somehow still end up eating eight innings anyway. However, the Astros’ offense chipped away at their deficit, getting it to three runs, and even putting the runners on to get it closer, although Texas eventually finished things off.
- Seattle Mariners (27-29) 4, Athletics (27-28) 1: Emerson Hancock’s gem carried the Mariners to a win over the A’s in Sacramento. Hancock allowed just one hit and two walks in six shutout innings innings, striking out three in an impressive performance. Meanwhile, RBI from Julio Rodríguez and others gave Hancock plenty enough support to get Seattle the win.
