Lennart Karl needs to wake up before “too much, too soon” becomes the story of his Bayern Munich career.
The talent is obvious, and the hype was understandable. But lately, Karl has looked like a player who has taken a step backward, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the flaws in his game.
The biggest issue is what happens when he does not have the ball. His off-the-ball movement needs to improve, because too often he looks content to wait for the game to come to him rather than actively
trying to make things happen. At Bayern Munich, you cannot spend stretches of a match standing around and expect the ball to magically find you. You have to work for it, create passing lanes, attack space, and give your teammates options.
The painful part is that he was fantastic at edging his way in front of defenders or sneaking into open pockets of space last season. Now, his movement is, well, unmoving.
Then there is his predictable tendency to cut inside onto his left foot. Having a preferred move is not a problem; failing to execute it with enough pace is. Karl often seems determined to get onto his left, but takes too long doing it, allowing defenders to read the play, close the space, and turn a promising situation into another dead end. If the move is that predictable, he needs to be quicker, more direct, and willing to try something different.
There is a legitimate concern that Karl could become a victim of “too much, too soon.” The attention, praise, and expectations have arrived at breakneck speed. Young players can start believing the hype before they have developed the consistency to justify it. Nobody should expect an 18-year-old to be the finished product, but potential cannot become an excuse for performances that lack urgency.
Bayern Munich fans only have so much patience, however. Supporters will forgive mistakes, inconsistency, and growing pains. What becomes harder to tolerate is a perceived lack of effort or tenacity. Karl could win plenty of people back simply by pressing harder, moving with more purpose, attacking defenders decisively, and showing that he is willing to fight for every minute.
There is also an important caveat — Karl suffered a serious thigh injury last summer, and it is entirely possible that he is still working his way back to full sharpness. That deserves consideration before anyone starts writing him off. He is still only 18, and a dip in form does not erase what he showed last season.
The point is not that Karl is suddenly a bad player. It is that he has to keep developing instead of relying on the reputation he built during his breakthrough campaign. The attention will not disappear, but he needs to learn to handle it while continuing to improve the less glamorous parts of his game.
The good news? There is still plenty of time to turn this around. Karl has the talent, the coaching, and the platform to get back on track. He just needs to show more urgency, more movement, and more fight. Sometimes, winning the fans back does not require a spectacular goal or a highlight-reel dribble. It starts with chasing a lost cause, making the extra run, and refusing to let a defender have an easy afternoon.
The hype can wait. The hard work cannot.
