The Denver Broncos announced that they have officially signed 13 undrafted free agents. Those 13 now include Cal cornerback Brent Austin, who was not included in the initial reporting, but does not include Charlotte wide receiver Sean Brown, who failed his physical, according to reports.
To make room for these undrafted free agents, the Broncos waived veteran outside linebacker Garrett Nelson and reserve offensive tackle Marques Cox. However, reports indicate that Nelson could return to the Broncos’
91-man roster after the rookie minicamp. We often see a handful of undrafted free agents get cut after the minicamp practices, and if that happens this time around, Nelson could find himself back on the Broncos’ 91-man roster. Remember, they can keep 91 total players due to punter Jeremy Crawshaw counting as their International Player roster exemption.
Looking at the Broncos 13 undrafted free agents, there are a few players who stand out as players who could potentially push for a spot on the 53-man roster.
Linebacker Taurean York is a highly instinctive and talented player who would be a top linebacker prospect if he were a little bit bigger. Currently, he comes in at 5-11, 226 pounds, and those size limitations are why he went undrafted. However, the talent is there, and if York continues to defy the odds, he could find himself on the Broncos’ 53-man roster come week one.
Iowa State’s Tyler Miller is another massive and athletic offensive tackle who the Broncos will look to develop. They have turned former undrafted free agents Alex Palczewski and Frank Crum into key reserves, and Miller could be the next one to crack the 53-man roster. Wide receiver Kolbe Katsis is an explosive wide receiver/returner who could push for a special teams role with a strong summer, and we may have a long snapper competition brewing between veteran Mitchell Fraboni and rookie Luke Basso. We’ll see how long that long snapper battle will go on and if Fraboni can keep his job.
These undrafted rookies will join the Broncos seven draft picks, along with the veteran/rookie tryouts on the field this weekend during the Broncos rookie minicamp practices. You can view all the players participating in this weekend’s rookie minicamp practices here
