It does not feel like it was all that long ago that Bayern Munich attacker Serge Gnabry was a young, up-and-comer eager to make his mark for club and country.
Somehow, Gnabry is now 30-years-old and is one
of the veterans on a German squad looking to find its way before the 2026 World Cup. Gnabry is embracing this role as a veteran leader.
“I want to bring my qualities and my form into the pitch, assist and score goals. It’s a must-win and a very important game for us,” said Gnabry ahead of the team’s match vs. Luxembourg (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I’m one of the experienced players with the most caps in the current squad. We have many young players. So I try to help the young players, like players like Mesut [Özil], Sami [Khedira], Thomas [Müller] did with me when I first arrived to the national team. But the most important thing is to show your leadership qualities on the pitch and lead by example.”
When asked if the team leaders would give extra attention to Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz to help him through his rumored struggles, Gnabry did not think Wirtz was going through a tough stretch.
“We all try to help each other as teammates, especially the ones in a difficult situation. I don’t have the impression that Flo is not doing well. He’s laughing and training well. Nobody doubts his qualities, and he shouldn’t either. Give the guy some time, it was a big move – but he has huge qualities and I’m certain that he will succeed,” Gnabry remarked.
And just like that, the kid was all grown up.
