What a win. The USMNT played Uruguay off the pitch on Tuesday night, scoring early and often to secure their third straight victory, this one over 16th ranked Uruguay out of CONMEBOL. Sebastian Berhalter
opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a beautiful curled shot off some set piece action with Sergino Dest who technically picked up the assist. Just minutes later Alex Freeman would score his first of the night, doubling the US lead with a header off a corner kick for his first goal wearing the stars and stripes. Freeman wasn’t done yet as he would score a second goal, the teams third, after dribbling through the Uruguayan defense in the 32nd minute. Diego Luna would add a fourth goal in the first half before the US conceded after an error by Matt Freese would allow Uruguay to get on the board just before the end of the half. Tanner Tessmann would add a fifth goal, a header off of a Giovanni Reyna cross, in the second half for the final score of 5-1.
It’s not every day that your team will score on five out of their seven shots on goal but Tuesday was one of those days and the result was a landslide victory for a US team over a quality, if somewhat disinterested appearing, opponent.
The ratings were not particularly surprising, with most players in the above average range, though Matt Freese is not doing anything to put fans mind’s at ease regarding the keeper situation for next summer and finished as the lowest scoring player with a 5.3, just below Aidan Morris with a 5.5. Sebastian Berhalter scored particularly well with an 8.4 that was a full point ahead of nearly every other player. Ultimately, and predictably, it was the two goal performance from Alex Freeman that earn him the honor of being named the SSFC Man of the Match with a spectacular 8.9 rating.
