Jonah Kusi-Asare’s time at Bayern Munich has been a series of highs and lows. Bought for a huge €4m fee from AIK Fotboll in January 2024 during new sporting director Christoph Freund’s one transfer window in charge, the move was always a risk. His profile as a technically gifted striker standing at 6’5″ is exceedingly rare in football, but there were questions about his attitude. There were rumors that he was lazy, that he was incredibly inconsistent-even for a youngster- and unwilling to run. Those
were the risks Freund accepted when the young Swede was signed.
For a while, it seemed like the risk had not been worth it. Despite the obvious talents and gifts the youngster possesses, Kusi-Asare was indeed inconsistent and went months at a time without scoring a goal. Injuries and inconsistency saw the Swede’s 18 months in the Bavarians’ youth academy end in disappointment. He remained highly rated at the Campus, though, and was chosen for Bayern’s 2025 summer pre-season.
There, he finally impressed, scoring two wonderful goals and being rewarded with the initial promise of being back up to talismanic striker Harry Kane for the 2025/26 season. A late transfer market scramble for reinforcements, however, saw striker Nicolas Jackson crystallize as a target and put Kusi-Asare on the transfer list with just a few days of the 2025 summer transfer window to go.
Fulham FC would be the team to get the youngster, paying a large loan fee to acquire his services. Despite damning words from the manager and struggles for playing time throughout the previous season, the Londoners see promise in Kusi-Asare and wish to keep him. Therefore, days after a weak bid, reporter Kerry Hau claims both teams have come to an agreement:
Jonah Kusi-Asare is set to join Fulham FC on a long-term contract! The 18-year-old Swedish striker will move from Bayern Munich for around €6m. He spent last season on loan at Craven Cottage and turned down other Premier League clubs in recent days. Fulham see big potential in Kusi-Asare and plan to develop him step by step.
BFW Analysis
This transfer fee is well under the previously agreed but option of around €12 million. Nowadays, Bayern have demonstrated a desire to retain a hand on a player’s future in case of future improvement over a bigger fee. It is likely the Bavarians have arranged some kind of sell on fee, as well as a buy back clause, in case the youngster does demonstrate the improvement many people see in him.
Financially, Bayern have made a big profit on the youngster. Kusi-Asare gets to go to a club where he sees more of a future and Fulham can bet on the youngster’s promise. It looks like a win-win deal for all.
