The Patriots showed some serious interest in Alec Pierce ahead of free agency, but the standout wide receiver will not be taking his talents to New England. Instead, he decided to return to the Indianapolis Colts on a record four-year, $124 million contract.
Pierce’s decision means that the Patriots will have to be looking elsewhere to bolster the receiver group around quarterback Drake Maye. Where? That’s the multi-million dollar question, but there are options to be considered.
The most prominent
among those, of course, is A.J. Brown. The current Eagles wideout has been the subject of trade rumors for a while now, with the Patriots considered a realistic landing spot due to his connection to head coach Mike Vrabel and the team’s obvious need for a high-end talent at the position. So far, however, nothing has materialized and New England continues to be unwilling to meet Philadelphia’s demands.
Besides Brown, the Patriots have also expressed interest in Packers free agent Romeo Doubs. A productive perimeter target capable of filling the X-receiver role, the 25-year-old caught 55 passes for 724 yards and six touchdowns in 2025.
Other wide receivers on the market include Mike Evans, Wan’Dale Robinson, Jauan Jennings, Jalen Nailor. All are talented players, but none have the same big-play potential that Pierce would have brought to the equation.
Nonetheless, the Patriots viewed the investment it would have needed to bring him in as incompatible with their roster construction plans. Consequently, they will have to look elsewhere to add to a group currently led by Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas and Kyle Williams.
