Uruguay has officially announced its squad for the October international window, and one name is notably missing: Fede Valverde. Marcelo Bielsa has decided to rest the Real Madrid midfielder, who will
not take part in La Celeste’s upcoming friendlies against the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan on October 10 and 13 — both to be held in Malaysia.
Despite being one of Uruguay’s most important players and the team’s vice-captain in the absence of José María Giménez, Valverde will stay in Madrid to recover and recharge. The decision was made jointly between Bielsa and the player, who have maintained open communication about Valverde’s condition. The Argentine coach was recently in Madrid for a conference and reportedly took the opportunity to discuss his captain’s fitness and workload.
The two friendlies — with long travel and little at stake — provided an ideal opportunity for Bielsa to rotate and give Valverde a breather. Given his relentless energy and the fact that he’s been playing in multiple positions for Xabi Alonso, including right-back in the 3–1 win over Villarreal, the rest comes at a perfect time.
Valverde is expected to rejoin the national team in November for more competitive friendlies against Mexico and the United States. For now, Real Madrid will be pleased to see their tireless midfielder get a rare pause to recharge ahead of a demanding stretch of club fixtures.
