For Bayern Munich defender Josip Stanišić, the journey to one of the biggest clubs in world football was shaped by far more than talent and determination. It was built on the sacrifices of his parents, whose unwavering support helped make his dream a reality.
“That family comes first. And never give up, always keep going. My dad left for work at five o’clock every morning and came back in the afternoon, and in his free time he always drove me everywhere. My mum also had a tough job, but she was always there
for me and my sister, even if I was still hungry at ten o’clock in the evening. As a child, you take that for granted. Over time, you learn to appreciate everything your parents have done for you. That feeling of family, of being there for each other, has shaped me,” Stanišić told FCBayern.com.
Those words paint a picture that countless athletes can relate to. Behind every professional career are parents making early morning drives, late-night meals, and countless personal sacrifices that often go unnoticed. For Stanišić, those experiences instilled values that continue to define him today: resilience, gratitude, and the importance of putting family first.
His connection to Bayern Munich also runs deep, thanks to his father.
“That’s right, he was 16 or 17 years old at the time. But he never really told me about it. One thing that’s for certain is that he’s always been a Bayern fan and often went to the stadium. As a referee, he was able to get tickets, and sometimes he would stand in the cold for hours in front of the Allianz Arena to get one. When Ivica Olić scored the winning goal against Manchester United, he was also in the stadium. There’s a photo of Olić tearing off his shirt after the goal, and in the background you can see my dad cheering in the stands. I definitely inherited my love for Bayern from him,” said Stanišić.
That story makes Stanišić’s career feel even more special. Growing up with a father who passionately supported Bayern Munich, only to one day wear the same crest himself, is the kind of full-circle moment that football rarely scripts.
While supporters know Stanišić as a dependable defender, these stories reveal the person behind the player. His success is rooted not only in hard work but also in a family that never stopped believing in him—and in a lifelong love for Bayern Munich that began long before he ever stepped onto the pitch at the Allianz Arena.
