Arizona women’s tennis’ season came to an end Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament opening round in Columbus, Ohio.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Pairs Zoya Chulak and Ciara Moore and Josie Usereau and Maria Garcia won their double matches.
Notre Dame tied the match by winning the singles point at the No. 4 court. Arizona’s Martyna Ostrzygalo won at No. 3 court 7-5, 6-4 to give the UA a 2-1 lead.
Notre Dame picked up the next two singles
points, at courts No. 1 and No. 5. Trailing 3-2, Arizona’s Chulak evened the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at court No. 6.
Tied at 3-3, the match hinged on the outcome at court No. 2 between Arizona’s Moore and Notre Dame’s Sophia Holod. Notre Dame prevailed in the end, with Holod winning 7-6, 5-7, 6-4.
Arizona ends the season 20-10. The Wildcats have lost in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in three straight years.
