Tony Khan’s current collection of wayward wrestling legends currently includes Sting, Jake Roberts, Jim Ross, Bryan Danielson, Adam “Edge” Copeland and Christian Cage*, the legacy of Owen Hart, Paul “Big Show” Wight, and we guess Ric Flair. According to Jon Alba, the AEW and Ring of Honor head honcho is “seriously” looking to add a big one who recently, and pretty loudly, washed his hands of WWE.
For The Takedown on SI.com, Alba writes:
Multiple sources tell The Takedown that AEW has expressed “real”
interest in working with Foley this year, though the capacity of which is not known. It was also not certain whether or not the organization would be interested in signing the 60-year-old, or if it would simply be an appearance.
That leaves a lot of room for speculation, and we’ll get back to that in a moment here. As for how Foley finds himself a free agent, remember that due to his fellow WWE Hall of Famer’s latest callous remarks about the late Rob Reiner, Foley announced late last year he could no longer support WWE while it associates itself with President Donald Trump. That’s meant speaking freely on issues related to the second Trump Presidency while his Legends deal with the company expires, which Alba says will happen “next month”.
Mick’s worked for pretty much every wrestling promotion we can think of… with AEW being the most notable exception. That’s where that speculation comes in, some of it already happening in our Feed.
One specific idea that’s come to mind for many in light of Alba’s report? An appearance at Double or Nothing a week from this Sunday. The late Mrs. Foley’s baby boy is from Long Island, which the May 24 PPV isn’t. But it is in Queens, which is the closest to Long Island of New York City’s five boroughs. It will also be main event-ed by another Long Islander, Maxwell Jacob Friedman.
MJF and Mick have bonded over their LI connection… in the way that wrestling folks do sometimes. Max likes to say, “Fuck Mick Foley. I’m the most famous Long Island wrestler of all time.” And before he realized what a bad idea wrestling in his particular 60-year-old body would be, Foley says he had a six-week program planned for himself and Friedman, after which he would have retired.
One of Alba’s sources said they didn’t have any “direct knowledge” of Khan negotiating with Foley for a Double or Nothing appearance, but “they would not be surprised if there was a push to use him on it if a deal could get done.”
Would you like to see Mick Foley as the special guest referee as MJF puts his hair on the line against Darby Allin for the AEW World title? How about in an ongoing role on AEW television?
Sound of below and we’ll see what happens!
* Yeah, I said it. Repeatedly
