The Commanders roster turnover continued at a rapid clip, with an important addition to the offensive line. According to a Tuesday evening report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Washington is signing former Pro Bowl tackle D.J. Humphries.
This move should tie in with the release of offensive tackle Foster Sarell, which the Commanders announced earlier Tuesday.
Humphries brings tons of experience to a Commanders position group dealing with some significant injuries.
Laremy Tunsil’s torn triceps was a major blow that cannot be understated. The early August injury required surgery and will take months to heal and rehabilitate, moving third-year pro Brandon Coleman from a position battle at left guard to left tackle.
That thinned Washington’s depth at the position, which Humphries was signed to fortify. He has the experience and savvy to do so, with 101 starts in 108 NFL games. He played eight seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, who made him the No. 24 overall NFL draft pick in 2015. While he has primarily worked at left tackle, he has experience on the right.
He earned a Pro Bowl honor following the 2021 campaign. Humphries played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024 and the L.A. Rams in 2025.
Humphries offers an upgrade at swing tackle, even if he doesn’t locate top form. He’ll have a few days to merge into the Commanders system, but it would be a shock if a signing like this doesn’t make the initial 53-man roster and have time to acclimate and find a role in the offensive front.
