Bayern Munich are absolutely flying this season under Vincent Kompany, following up on their Bundesliga title from last season. They climbed back onto their perch in German football after their one-year
hiatus when Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen lifted the Meisterschale in incredibly impressive fashion, but it already looks like Bayern are heading to yet another Bundesliga title unless they completely fall apart.
The reigning Bundesliga champions made it 13 wins from as many matches after their 3-0 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach, which equaled the consecutive wins record from the start of any top five European league season that was set by AC Milan back in the 1992/93 season. On current form, there’s absolutely no reason why Kompany’s side shouldn’t be pushing for a treble, and at the very least, a domestic double.
In a recent episode of the Sky90 podcast, former Bayern and Germany midfielder Lothar Matthäus had heaps of praise for Kompany and the way he has stabilized the way Bayern has been playing since he’s taken charge of the club. There is a level of consistency now that has been missing in recent seasons.
“They have hit the jackpot with Kompany. Kompany has again involved the players in his decisions and clear, open, honest speeches. He reinvented FC Bayern after four or five years of unrest and did a lot of things that the club missed in those years,” Matthäus enthused (via Sport1).
To add to his admiration of the Belgian manager and the current state of the club’s form, Matthäus pegged his former club as one of the current favorites to go on and win the Champions League. “If they keep up this performance, they are one of the big favorites for the Champions League,” he stressed. Only Paris Saint-Germain is currently ahead of them in the group stage table after three matches played and the two sides square off against one another on matchday four of the competition on November 4th.
Even more impressively, Kompany has been able to lead his side to where they’re currently at without superstars Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala, both of whom are edging closer to making returns to action. Not to mention, he has also been without defender Hiroki Ito for quite some time and both Raphaël Guerreiro and Serge Gnabry both just returned from minor injury problems. Case in point, Kompany has been making it work with whoever he has available and the squad has shown no signs of slowing down any time soon.
