In one of the season’s most-anticipated games, the Kansas City Chiefs were unable to come back from a 21-10 second-quarter deficit, recording a 28-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills that dropped their record to 5-4 as they headed into their Week 10 bye.
First quarter
Bills strike first with Kincaid touchdown after extended march
Buffalo opened the game with a well-balanced, 13-play, 66-yard scoring drive that chewed nearly seven minutes off the clock and ended with a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Allen to tight end Dalton Kincaid. The Bills overcame an early special-teams penalty, as linebacker Dorian Williams was flagged for offensive holding on the opening kickoff, forcing Buffalo to start from its own 16-yard line. From there, Allen kept the offense in rhythm with a series of short throws — including multiple completions to wide receiver Khalil Shakir — and steady gains on the ground by running back James Cook. Cook’s biggest play came on a 17-yard run around the right end, pushing the ball into Kansas City territory. Facing third-and-5 at the Chiefs’ 34-yard line, Allen found running back Ty Johnson in the flat for a 9-yard gain to extend the drive. After a setback on a 4-yard loss by Cook, Allen hit wide receiver Curtis Samuel for 6 yards to bring up third-and-8. On the next snap, Allen fired deep to the right sideline, where Kincaid made the catch and walked in for the touchdown.
On their first possession, the Chiefs went three-and-out and failed to capitalize after Buffalo’s long scoring drive. Running back Kareem Hunt picked up 3 yards on first down, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes followed with two incompletions — one over the middle to wide receiver Marquise Brown, and one short right intended for Rashee Rice on third-and-7. Matt Araiza punted 37 yards to the Bills’ 27-yard line, where Khalil Shakir returned it 3 yards to the 30.
Chiefs defense holds on fourth down to keep Bills off the board
Buffalo moved the ball into plus territory on its second possession but came away with nothing after the Chiefs’ defense came up with a fourth-down stop near midfield. Running back James Cook jump-started the drive with back-to-back runs of 8 and 7 yards to move the chains. Quarterback Josh Allen followed with a series of short completions — including a dump-off to Ty Johnson and a 5-yard strike to tight end Dalton Kincaid on third-and-7 to set up a manageable fourth down. But on fourth-and-2 from the Kansas City 47, Allen fired over the middle for wide receiver Khalil Shakir, only to have the pass broken up by safety Bryan Cook. The Chiefs’ defense took over on downs with 4:21 remaining in the first quarter.
Chiefs tie it up as Rice caps strong drive with short touchdown run
After a fourth-down stop by the defense, Kansas City responded with a methodical 52-yard touchdown drive to even the score. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes opened the possession with a 19-yard strike to wide receiver Rashee Rice down the left sideline, moving the ball into Buffalo territory. Two plays later, wide receiver Xavier Worthy picked up 7 more yards on a quick out to set up second-and-short. Buffalo appeared to stall the drive with a sack at the 23-yard line, but a defensive holding penalty on safety Cole Bishop gave the Chiefs a fresh set of downs. Kansas City took advantage with a steady ground attack, as running back Kareem Hunt carried twice for 10 yards to reach the 3-yard line.
Second quarter
On the first play of the second quarter, the Chiefs reached into their bag of tricks. Rice took a direct snap and ran off right tackle for a 3-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7–7.
Buffalo’s next drive went nowhere, and a special-teams miscue gave Kansas City a boost. Running back James Cook was held to 1 yard on first down, and after a 6-yard gain by wide receiver Keon Coleman, quarterback Josh Allen was sacked on third-and-3 by defensive end George Karlaftis. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky booted it 48 yards to the Kansas City 17, where Niko Remigio returned it 5 yards to the 22. A 15-yard facemask penalty on running back Ty Johnson tacked on extra yardage, allowing the Chiefs to start at their own 37-yard line with 12:50 remaining in the second quarter.
Chiefs get on the board with Butker field goal
Kansas City capitalized on favorable field position and a key third-down conversion to chip into Buffalo’s lead with a 46-yard field goal by Harrison Butker. The drive began at the Kansas City 37 after a facemask penalty on the punt return. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes took a sack on first down, but rebounded with a 24-yard strike over the middle to wide receiver Rashee Rice on second-and-16, moving the ball to the Buffalo 46. Running back Kareem Hunt followed with a 13-yard gain off right tackle to reach the 33. From there, the offense stalled — Clyde Edwards-Helaire lost 2 yards, Mahomes missed Noah Gray deep on second down, and a short pass to rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy on third-and-12 picked up only 7. Buffalo used a timeout before the fourth-down attempt, but Butker stepped in and drilled the 46-yard kick to cap a 36-yard drive and cut the Bills’ lead to 7–3 with 9:31 remaining in the second quarter.
Bills respond quickly as Johnson punches in short touchdown
Buffalo answered Kansas City’s field goal with a five-play, 70-yard touchdown drive, retaking a 14–10 lead midway through the second quarter. The series opened with quarterback Josh Allen hitting tight end Josh Hawes on a short route that turned into an 18-yard gain, followed by a 7-yard pickup to wide receiver Tyrell Shavers. A holding penalty on tight end Dawson Knox wiped out an 8-yard run by James Cook, but Allen erased the setback on the very next play with a 47-yard strike to tight end Dalton Kincaid, who beat cornerback Nohl Williams and was forced out at the Kansas City 8. Buffalo stayed in no-huddle, and running back Ty Johnson handled the rest — first gaining 5 yards off left guard, then finishing the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run behind left tackle. Kicker Matt Prater added the extra point, and with 6:39 to go in the second quarter, the Bills extended their lead to 14–10.
Chiefs cross midfield but stall on back-to-back breakups by Bishop
Kansas City appeared to be building momentum after a strong kickoff return and a couple of first downs, but the drive stalled just outside field-goal range after two straight incompletions into tight coverage. The possession began at the Chiefs’ 40-yard line following a 32-yard return by wide receiver Tyquan Thornton. Running back Kareem Hunt opened with a 7-yard run, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes moved the chains with a catch by wide receiver Rashee Rice down to the Buffalo 46. A short gain by running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire set up third-and-3 at the 39, but Mahomes missed wide receiver Xavier Worthy near the numbers, and a penalty for illegal formation was declined. Facing fourth-and-3, head coach Andy Reid kept the offense on the field rather than attempt a 57-yard field goal. Mahomes looked again for Rice, but safety Cole Bishop broke up the pass for a second time and the Chiefs turned it over on downs with 4:15 remaining in the second quarter.
Bills finish strong with Allen sneak, extend lead before halftime
Buffalo strung together a sharp two-minute drive late in the second quarter, covering 60 yards in seven plays and extending the lead to 21–10 on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Josh Allen. Starting at their own 40-yard line after Kansas City’s turnover on downs, the Bills leaned on running back James Cook to get the drive moving — first with a 16-yard run up the middle, then a short gain off right tackle to cross midfield. Allen connected with wide receiver Khalil Shakir on back-to-back completions, including a third-down conversion near the two-minute warning. On first down from the Kansas City 33, Allen dropped a deep ball into tight end Dawson Knox for a 30-yard gain down the right sideline, setting up first-and-goal at the 3. Kansas City used both of its remaining timeouts to preserve clock, but Cook powered forward for 2 yards on first down, and Allen finished the drive with a designed sneak behind left guard for the score. Prater’s extra point was good, giving Buffalo a 21–10 lead with 1:33 left in the second quarter.
Chiefs race downfield in final minute but settle for short field goal
Kansas City responded quickly after Buffalo’s touchdown, stringing together a 66-yard drive in just 1:30, but came away with only three points after stalling at the 1-yard line. Niko Remigio set up the possession with a 32-yard kick return to the Kansas City 33, and Patrick Mahomes immediately went to work. He hit running back Kareem Hunt for 6 yards, then found tight end Travis Kelce over the middle for 20 yards to the Buffalo 41. On the next play, Mahomes launched a deep ball to wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who made a contested 40-yard catch down the right sideline to set up first-and-goal at the 1. After a Buffalo timeout, Hunt was stuffed up the middle, and the Chiefs used their final timeout with 15 seconds left. Mahomes then threw back-to-back incompletions — first right, then left, both from the 1-yard line — with the final attempt intended for Kelce. On fourth-and-1 with just five seconds remaining, head coach Andy Reid took the points. Harrison Butker knocked through a 19-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 21–13 with one second left in the half.
Buffalo took over at its own 35-yard line with three seconds left in the second quarter following a touchback. Quarterback Josh Allen took a knee to end the half, sending the teams into the locker room with the Bills holding an eight-point lead.
Third quarter
Kansas City opened the second half at its own 31-yard line after a 29-yard kickoff return by Tyquan Thornton but went three-and-out. Patrick Mahomes completed a short pass to tight end Travis Kelce for 5 yards on first down, but wide receiver Xavier Worthy was stopped for a 2-yard loss on a swing pass to the left. On third-and-7, Mahomes looked deep down the right sideline for Brown, but the pass was broken up by safety Bishop with pressure from defensive tackle DaQuan Williams. Araiza punted 49 yards, and Khalil Shakir called for a fair catch at the Buffalo 17 with 13:29 remaining in the third quarter.
Buffalo picked up a pair of first downs to push into Kansas City territory but stalled just outside field-goal range and was forced to punt. Quarterback Josh Allen converted a third-and-2 with an 11-yard keeper up the middle, then found tight end Dalton Kincaid over the middle for 12 yards on the next series to reach the Chiefs’ 49-yard line. A short run by James Cook and two incomplete passes followed, including one where Allen was pressured by defensive end Ashton Gillotte. On third-and-9, Allen dumped it off to wide receiver Khalil Shakir, who was immediately wrapped up by linebacker Nick Bolton for no gain. The Bills sent out Mitch Wishnowsky to punt, and his 37-yard kick was downed at the Kansas City 11-yard line by safety Jarius Solomon with 8:48 left in the third quarter.
The Chiefs began the drive with a spark when quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with tight end Travis Kelce on a deep ball for 28 yards, converting a third-and-9 from their own 12. Brashard Smith followed with a 4-yard run up the middle. But things quickly unraveled. On second down, Mahomes looked to go deep again, but pressure forced an errant throw. Defensive end D.J. Walker got a hand on the ball, slightly tipping it, but the officials missed the deflection and flagged Mahomes for intentional grounding, backing Kansas City up 10 yards. On third-and-16, Mahomes was sacked by a combination of Michael Hoecht and Greg Rousseau, pushing the Chiefs into a fourth-and-25. Punter Matt Araiza flipped the field with a 60-yard boot, and Buffalo returner Khalil Shakir brought it back 11 yards to the Bills’ 26-yard line with 5:42 left in the third quarter.
Allen’s keeper caps efficient 74-yard Bills drive
The Bills put together their most efficient possession of the second half, marching 74 yards in eight plays to extend their lead. The drive opened with quarterback Josh Allen hitting wide receiver Khalil Shakir on the sideline for 20 yards. Two plays later, Allen connected with Keon Coleman for 11 more, and then followed with a 28-yard strike to Elijah Moore to put Buffalo inside the red zone. Running back James Cook took over from there, carrying three straight times to push the ball to the 1-yard line. Facing third-and-1, Allen kept it himself, powering up the middle for the touchdown to cap the 3:57 drive. With 1:36 left in the third quarter, the extra point made it a 28-13 Bills lead.
Chiefs claw back with gutsy fourth-down score, two-point conversion
Kansas City’s drive began late in the third quarter after a 33-yard connection from Patrick Mahomes to wide receiver Hollywood Brown moved the chains. A short pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster closed the quarter, setting the Chiefs up at the Buffalo 31-yard line to start the fourth.
Fourth quarter
On the first play of the fourth, Mahomes was sacked for a 9-yard loss by Joey Bosa. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor was injured on the play and did not return. Facing third-and-17, Mahomes looked deep for Xavier Worthy but couldn’t connect. On fourth down, he came up big — hitting Rashee Rice on the sideline for 29 yards to move the chains. After runs by Kareem Hunt and a scramble by Mahomes brought the ball to the 2-yard line, Hunt was stopped on third-and-short. But on fourth-and-goal, he powered in behind left guard for the touchdown. The Chiefs kept the offense on the field, and Mahomes found Travis Kelce for the two-point conversion to pull within seven, narrowing the deficit to 28–21.
Chiefs defense pushes Bills backward with back-to-back sacks
After Josh Allen kept a short-yardage play alive with a sneak to convert on third-and-1, the Bills crossed midfield. But that’s where Kansas City’s defense slammed the door. A run by James Cook was stuffed at the line, and then cornerback Trent McDuffie and linebacker Leo Chenal delivered consecutive sacks on Allen, pushing the Bills out of field-goal range. On fourth-and-18, Mitch Wishnowsky’s punt was fair caught by Niko Remigio at the Kansas City 13.‘
Kansas City’s next drive unraveled after a promising start. Running back Kareem Hunt picked up 8 yards on first down, but an offensive holding penalty on tackle Wanya Morris backed the Chiefs up. Patrick Mahomes found tight end Travis Kelce for 13 yards on second-and-12 to get back into manageable range, and Brashard Smith got the call on first down but was stopped for no gain. After an incompletion to Smith, Buffalo called a timeout to preserve clock. On third-and-10, Mahomes tried to hit wide receiver Xavier Worthy down the right sideline, but the throw hung just long enough for cornerback Maxwell Hairston to undercut the route and come down with the interception at the Buffalo 33. It was Mahomes’ first turnover of the game.
Buffalo had a chance to extend its lead late, taking over with under three minutes left and clinging to a four-point edge. Running back James Cook handled the bulk of the work, carrying the ball on six straight plays out of the two-minute warning. He opened with a 6-yard gain up the middle to midfield, then took a handoff left for a yard to the Kansas City 49. On third-and-3, Josh Allen dumped it off to Cook in the right flat for 11 yards and a first down at the 38. After a Chiefs timeout, Cook ran for a yard up the middle, then picked up 2 more on second down. With 1:11 remaining and facing third-and-7, Cook got the carry again but was wrapped up after a 1-yard gain. Buffalo burned its final timeout and sent out kicker Matt Prater for a 52-yard field-goal attempt. His kick had the distance but struck the right upright and bounced out — no good — giving the Chiefs life with 26 seconds to play.
Kansas City took over at its own 42-yard line with 26 seconds left and no timeouts, needing a touchdown to send the game to overtime. Patrick Mahomes opened the drive with an 18-yard strike to Xavier Worthy, who got out of bounds at the Buffalo 40. With just seconds remaining, Mahomes took three deep shots at the end zone. The first was rushed by Bosa and fell incomplete. The second, intended for Tyquan Thornton over the middle, was broken up by safety Cole Bishop. On the final play, Mahomes launched a Hail Mary heave to Brown, but cornerback Maxwell Hairston was there in tight coverage and knocked it away, preserving Buffalo’s win.
