Bayern Munich’s imperious 16 out of 16 wins to start the season saw fans and analysts alike blown away by the form and footballing quality on display. Bayern’s subsequent run of 6 wins in 9 games was less impressive and some of the Bavarians’ weaknesses were put more on display during that time. The German champions struggled to keep a clean sheet, the man to man defending at the back began to see the high line exposed more often and the team conceded many goals from set pieces.
These issues were
not overlooked by head coach Vincent Kompany. Speaking after Bayern’s 4-0 win over Heidenheim, in which the Bavarians allowed their opponents to create 4 big chances, the Belgian coach spoke about areas of improvement:
“As a coach you always have to say everything can be better. Of course we’re scoring a lot of goals, we shouldn’t forget that even though we want to improve on other things,” Kompany warned, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We know which areas we have to look at: defending set pieces, counters. When we were totally focused, we always defended well. But because our game is very dynamic, there’s sometimes a risk. We want to improve on that, but without losing the things that make us strong. That’s very important.”
Of course, issues are hard to iron out when a team is playing every 3 days. Kompany and his team can now look to a winter break followed by a short pre-season that may give the coach the chance to work those kinks out.
