Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has had a very up and down second year so far. At one point he was the worst starting QB on intermediate passes – according to SISdatahub.com. After week five, he is bad
in some things, average in others and good in a few. Let’s review.
Want to dive into the data? Double tight, Y left, fulldata dive on two. Ready, Break! (for those who never played this is how many offenses break the huddle to head to the LOS).
In terms of passer rating, Bo Nix has an 87.9 which is 24th among starting QBs. His QBR is also 24th at 43.5.

IQR which is SISdatahub’s equivalent to passer rating. His BLOS IQR of 86 is 19th of 32. His short IQR of 98 is 16th. He’s 27th in intermediate IQR at 39. Only Jalen Hurts, Geno Smith, Cam Ward, Bryce Young and Michael Penix are worse. His deep IQR of 111 is 8th. Lamar Jackson is #1 at 135.

SIS advanced passing shows him as 21st in on target % at 72.4%. He’s 22nd in catchable % at 84.7%. He’s 26th in average throw depth. He has the second best sack % in the NFL, behind Daniel Jones.

Over at NFL NextGen stats where they have full QB passing charts by distance and location, I have analyzed the charts and found that Bo Nix is 19 of 50 for 5 TDs and 3 INTs on throws 10 yards or more from the line of scrimmage. On throws less than 10 yards from the LOS he is 95 of 126 with 3 TDs and 1 INT.

Over at profootballreference.com Bo Nix is getting pressure on 19.2% of his dropbacks which is just about league average. Trevor Lawrence, which he doesn’t trip on his guard, is getting pressured the least at 10.2%. Brock Purdy is getting pressured on a rate of 29.1% which is worst in the league. Bo Nix is 28th in bad throw % at 19.9%. Dak Prescott is best at 10.0% and Michael Penix is worst at 24.0%.

Obviously Nix has had some high profile misses on downfield throws through the first five games. His stats would look much better on his deep passing if he had hit those. Thankfully the Jets have the third worst passing defense so far this season allowing a passer rating of of 114.3. Only the Cowboys and Dolphins are worse. The Jets have allowed 11 passing TDs and have no interceptions. The only other defense with zero interceptions is the 49ers.
The Bronco defense is currently 7th in passer rating allowed at 83.3. The Texans are the best at 70.4.
I’m hoping for a big game from Nix against the inept Jet passing defense. The Jets also have one of the worst pass rushes in the league. They are getting pressure on only 15.1% of dropbacks (3rd worst) they have seven total sacks in five games. The Broncos have one game with six sacks.
Bo Nix has not been doing much with his legs so far this season. The best running QB in the NFL right now is, don’t laugh, Baker Mayfield. According to SIS he has 9 broken tackles so far this season and has run for 10 first downs in five games. He also has 100 yards after contact which is tied for 3rd behind Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson.

SIS has Justin Fields costing his team 7 points with his rushing. I am not sure how they calculate this. Bo Nix rushing has gained one point for the Broncos.
