With a day that should have been filled with positives, some awful news has struck the New Orleans Saints. After picking up his 5th-year option this offseason, Bryan Bresee had a massive year ahead of him for contract discussions moving forward, but everything has changed. At practice today, Bresee left with a knee injury, and it seems it’s the worst-case scenario as the injury is believed to be significant, which would end his season before it even began.
The future becomes different because of this news. Bresee was set for a big year with the Saints supporting him (shown by the 5th-year option being picked up) and improvements being made in his own game. The run defense improved last season, and he continued to pressure the QB. This was the year to show he can be the franchise’s star DT, but now that won’t happen. Also, an injury like this threatens to completely stunt the growth Bresee has made.
Looking at this from a contract perspective, it puts his future in doubt. Bresee has dealt with injuries his entire career, and the Saints may be more hesitant to give him an extension in 2028. That is still far in the future, but it’s going to be a storyline to pay attention to.
Then, we have to talk about this season. Young players like Vernon Broughton and Christen Miller will need to step up right away, and this injury may also open up the path for Zxavian Harris to make the roster. Also, edge rushers like Carl Granderson may be able to fill the vacancy left by Bresee because of how Brandon Staley’s defense is built. Still, this is a small roadblock that the Saints are going to need to figure out fast.
