For Joshua Kimmich, Germany’s latest World Cup exit was more than just another disappointing result. It was the toughest elimination of his career, particularly because of the role he carried into the tournament.
Kimmich has now experienced three consecutive World Cup exits, and the latest one clearly hit differently. The Bayern Munich midfielder acknowledged that he needed time to process what happened, before being able to look at the bigger picture.
“For me, it was the toughest elimination. It happened
for the third time, this time in a different role, which made it hurt even more. I needed time to process it and put it into perspective. Looking back, those three World Cup exits are part of my career. You can’t undo them. But you can make sure things go differently in the future. That’s where I’m directing my energy and focus. We will do everything we can to bring joy back to the people,” Kimmich told RTL / Sky Germany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Kimmich’s comments reflect the added responsibility he carried as Germany’s captain and one of the team’s central leaders. At previous tournaments, he was still establishing himself on the international stage. This time, expectations were considerably higher.
There is also a sense of determination in Kimmich’s message. He cannot change Germany’s history at the last three World Cups, but he can help shape what comes next.
Rather than dwelling on another painful early exit, Kimmich is already looking toward the future. And for Germany, bringing joy back to the supporters will ultimately require turning those painful lessons into results when the next major tournament arrives.
