LSU is coming off a dominant 31-0 victory over Mississippi State, but the Tigers face a tougher challenge Saturday when they travel to Jordan-Hare Stadium to take on Auburn. The Tigers are coming off a 27-24 upset over No. 1 Georgia, giving them plenty of momentum heading into the matchup.
If LSU wins:
If LSU wins, it would be a significant step forward for head coach Lane Kiffin and his team. The Tigers improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play after shutting out Mississippi State, with quarterback Sam Leavitt
putting on a show.
A road victory over Auburn would give LSU their first away win of the season and help the Tigers build momentum heading into the second half of their conference schedule. With Alabama and Texas still on the schedule, LSU needs to string together wins to remain in contention in the SEC race.
However, Auburn has shown they can compete with the best teams in the country. Their recent victory over Georgia proved the Tigers cannot afford to overlook their opponent, especially in a hostile road environment.
If LSU loses:
If LSU loses, questions about their ability to win away from home will continue to grow. The Tigers have already suffered road losses against Ole Miss and Kentucky, and another loss would leave them with three SEC defeats before November.
Another setback would also make LSU’s path toward the top of the conference standings extremely more difficult. Although the Tigers would still have opportunities to recover, they cannot afford to keep dropping games against SEC opponents if they hope to make a serious push late in the season.
Ultimately, Saturday’s matchup is an important test for Kiffin’s program. A win would give LSU valuable momentum and their first road victory, while a loss would leave the Tigers searching for consistency as the SEC schedule intensifies.
