Good morning, baseball fans!
What a difference a couple of weeks can make. It feels like just yesterday that we were watching a lifeless, feckless, and despondent San Francisco Giants team limping through loss after loss as they slipped further down in the standings.
The tables have turned, however. Something has caused the Giants to be pissed off for greatness and they now find themselves just on the outside of the Wild Card looking in. As of the time this is being written (before Tuesday night’s
game), they are three games behind the New York Mets for the third Wild Card slot.
Now, there’s still a good chunk of games to go, but, as a long-time best friend of a Mets fan, I feel like it’s fair to hope that the Mets will ultimately be, well, the Mets. I love them, they’re probably my second favorite NL team. But I can’t deny the historical evidence.
Personally, I’m the kind of person who expects the worst. That way you can either be right or pleasantly surprised. Is that an unhealthy coping mechanism? Absolutely. But these are the times we live in. So I’m going to keep my optimism to a cautious level for now.
That said, I would not fault anyone for getting their hopes up. And heck, there really is still a part of my brain that thinks that the Taylor Swift October album release/Giants World Series Win correlation might be a thing! Who can say? At least for now.
What is your current level of optimism for this season?
