The NFL trade deadline is November 10, and several NFC contenders aren’t content to stand pat. The Seattle Seahawks have acquired guard Quenton Nelson from Indianapolis. The San Francisco 49ers grabbed DT DeForest Buckner. Then there’s those pesky Chicago Bears, who as of this morning have moved to acquire DL Jeffery Simmons.
It’s decision time for the Green Bay Packers. What should or will general manager Brian Gutekunst do? I suppose those are two distinct questions, and time will tell.
Wide receiver
is an obvious starting point. With Jayden Reed on IR, the Packers could use another dependable target for Jordan Love. Christian Watson and Matthew Golden offer plenty of big-play potential, but a solid receiver who can move the chains could help this often arrhythmic Packers offense find its groove more regularly.
Injuries have depleted Green Bay’s interior defensive line, and adding a disruptive presence — or even just a big fat guy (complimentary) — could help shore up a unit that needs to hold its own against the NFC’s best offenses.
Gute has already brought in reinforcements on the offensive line, but the unit is still the team’s primary weakness. Is another move possible there?
With limited draft capital, the Packers will weigh acquisition cost against potential return. But inaction carries risks of its own. Chicago is positioning itself to overtake the division, and other NFC contenders are actively stocking up for the stretch run. Green Bay doesn’t need to “win” the trade deadline, but it would be nice to emerge better equipped to win football games. If Gutekunst believes this team has a legitimate postseason run in it, now is the time to prove it.
