Kenny Blakeney has a unique spot in Duke history: he was there for the highest watermark in program history, the back-to-back titles (redshirted for the first and played on the second) and was also there in 1994-95,
when things fell apart.
In fact, he was a captain the year Duke had epaulets on their uniforms, a design feature which was scrapped after the train wreck of 1994-95.
He went on to coach for a while, including a stint with Tommy Amaker at Harvard, then worked for Under Armour for several years before regaining his passion for the game.
Now of course he’s the coach at Howard and while he was in town for the Brotherhood Run, did an episode with the Brotherhood Podcast.
Blakeney has been an interesting presence at Howard. On the one hand, the team has not won extensively, but winning consistently outside a power conference program, much less an HBCU, is not easy to do.
But he has done some interesting things there, including trying to get Howard into the big money part of college sports with an entrepreneurial idea the school didn’t care for and secondly, may have worn Meta glasses during the Duke game Sunday. We haven’t heard whether this is true but it’s a fascinating idea, particularly if he’s getting information like analytics on his lenses, which leads to an interesting question: what happens if players start to wear them and get real-time information?
It’s the kind of thing Blakeney, who is forward-looking, might be curious about.
Anyway, Tyler Thornton guest hosts this episode which is appropriate since he worked for Blakeney at Howard before moving to Duke. Blakeney was replaced by Nate James.
We haven’t had a chance to listen yet but it’s going to be interesting.
