Aljaž Kunc signed with Bàsquet Girona Thursday morning for the upcoming Liga ACB season. His departure from Arriva Polski Cukier Toruń marks the end of a three-year stint where he earned the affectionate nickname “Alpaczino”.
His former club expressed pride on a Facebook post in his move to a “stronger league” framing the goodbye as a “see you later.”
Kunc’s journey to the top tier of Spanish basketball includes his time in college where he played for Washington State (2018–2021) and Iowa State (2021–2023).
In his most recent professional season in Poland, he proved his readiness for a higher level by averaging 17.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 35.7% from three-point range.
Bàsquet Girona sports director Fernando San Emeterio highlighted several reasons for the signing, describing Kunc as a player in “clear progression” with a “wide margin for growth.”
Kunc is seen as a perimeter threat capable of “opening the field” and attacking the basket from the outside. San Emeterio praised Kunc’s “intuition in both offensive and defensive rebounding” and his active style, which aligns with Girona’s goal of a “proactive defense.”
Kunc is also a current member of the Slovenian national team, having played in qualifiers for EuroBasket 2025 and the 2027 World Cup. At Girona, he joins a roster featuring Martinas Geben, Sergi Martínez and Pep Busquets for the club.
San Emeterio believes Kunc has the potential to “perform at a very high level from the very beginning.”
