Nebraska 3, Michigan 0 – 25-18, 25-13, 25-18
Husker volleyball made their way to Ann Arbor after Friday’s match in East Lansing to take on the Michigan Wolverines. This was also Harper’s Homecoming Match. Even though the Wolverines started hot, they were no match for the Huskers today.
I have to insert yet another B1G+ rant because the Huskers, according to B1G+, had girls in new positions today. Bergen Reilly was the opposite, Laney Choboy was the setter, Virginia Adriano was the DS, Teraya Sigler
was a middle blocker, and Andi Jackson was. Libero. Truly, I don’t know how they screw this up when they have the starting lineup sitting in front of them.
The only other issues I had were that the up close camera was just a little shaky in the start of the match and the commentator got Allick and Sigler confused at point, I’m just being kind of nit picky at this point. Ok rant over.
Skyler Pierce was still out today, but it looked like she finally had the boot off. She should be returning soon as that is a good sign that it is getting better.
The Crisler Center in Ann Arbor sold out for the 1st time ever for a volleyball match. Today, they had an attendance of 12,707 people and beat their previous record of 8,137. Nebraska was part of yet again another historic match.
The Wolverines came out very strong at the beginning of the match scoring the first 2 points. Nebraska only had 1 kill through the first 5 or 6 points as well as their points were coming off of Michigan service errors.
The Huskers finally got the tie at 7-7 and got their first lead at 9-8 before Michigan tied it again and then took the 10-9 lead. Nebraska managed to get the 12-11 lead again and never looked back after this.
The Huskers went on a 5-0 scoring run to make the scorer 19-13, but Michigan was out just yet. Laney Choboy was noticeably struggling on service receive so the Wolverines were targeting her with almost every serve. Michigan went on a 4-0 scoring run to keep the score close at 23-8 which forced Nebraska to take a time out.
The Huskers closed out set 1 with a win at 25-18. Harper Murray led the team with 4 kills and Andi Jackson was hitting a perfect 1.000% after the 1st for the 2nd straight match. Nebraska hit .360% while holding Michigan to .146% even though Michigan had lots of life to start the match.
The 2nd set was all Nebraska and really never gave Michigan a chance to do anything. They didn’t want them to get another hot start like they did in the 1st set today. They also had a hot start in the September match as well.
Nebraska’s lead got as big as 16-8 before Michigan started scoring some point to try and get back in it. Nebraska would hit set point at only 24-13 and would take the 2nd set on the 1st set point.
Harper Murray recorded her first 2 hitting errors since last Friday’s match against Washington when she had only 1. She is also taking the majority of the swings for Nebraska.
After the 2nd, we still have the same leaders in both kills and hitting %. Murray has 6 kills and Jackson is still hitting at a 1.000% clip going 4 for 4.
The Huskers hit better this time around at .400% while holding Michigan in the negative at -0.185%. Michigan’s Allison Jacobs is also struggling herself hitting at a -.111 clip and only going 4 for 18 with 6 errors.
The first 2 sets took under an hour to play today and the 3rd set started just after an hour eclipsed on the match so today was definitely a quick one.
Michigan had a lot more fight in the 3rd set as it was much closer than the 2nd with the Wolverines coming within a point of Nebraska several times. They also were having success serving as the Huskers were having issues with receiving.
Manaia Ogbechie came in about half way through the 3rd set for Rebekah Allick and she had a good match for how long she played. Campbell Flynn also got some playing time near the end of the 3rd set as well.
The Huskers pulled away near the end with a 4-0 scoring run to make the score 18-12 before an Allison Jacobs kill ended that run.
Maisie Boesiger got a warm welcome to the court as she got to come in as a serving sub late in the 3rd and also got targeted in serve receive and passed it pretty perfectly.
A Virginia Adriano kill brought match point for the Huskers to try and close out the match. Michigan pushed the Huskers to set point #3 and Manaia Ogbechie closed out the match for a Husker win. This was the Huskers’ 9th straight sweep.
Harper Murray ended the match with a team high of 9 kills today and Andi Jackson followed right behind her with 8 kills and the team leading hitting percentage of .800%, going 8 for 10.
Virginia Adriano and Taylor Landfair both had 7 kills today and both also hit over .300% as well. Rebekah Allick with 4, Manaia Ogbechie with 3, and Teraya Sigler with 2 round out the kill totals for the Huskers.
Nebraska’s hitting was on par today as they hit at a .390% clip and held Michigan to only .079% which is very good considering Michigan has one of the best in Allison Jacobs on their team.
Nebraska will travel home this afternoon and will finally get to play some home matches next weekend after a long few weekends on the road.
On Friday, they will take on the Northwestern Wildcats at the Bob with the match beginning at 6:00pm CT. It will be televised on Nebraska Public Media and B1G+ as well.
Saturday’s match will be against Michigan State for their 2nd meeting this season. That match will begin at 7:30pm CT and will be broadcast on B1G Network. Football plays at 11:00am CT so you shouldn’t have to miss this one!
