After yesterday’s debacle, it was largely assumed that Alabama would drop at least one spot in the College Football Playoff rankings, needing to sweat out the committee’s decision.
As it turns out, the SEC Championship Game made no difference to either participant.
Georgia is still the 3-seed in the upcoming tournament and will enjoy a well-earned bye, and Alabama stayed in the 9th slot. The result is a rematch with Oklahoma, this time in Norman. Oklahoma won the first matchup between these two, a mere
four weeks ago in Tuscaloosa, in a game that Alabama statistically outperformed the Sooners.
The only statistic that matters in the end is the score, of course, and Oklahoma won that one 23-21. Brent Venables’ defense has caused all kinds of havoc this season, tying for the national lead with 41 sacks. This has led to some key turnovers, including the 87-yard pick six that swung the scoreboard in Oklahoma’s favor last time.
We’ll have plenty more on this matchup in the coming weeks.
