Now, that the college football season is over, the NFL draft process will really kick into gear.
There will be all-star games, the NFL combine, pro day workouts and pre-draft visits to help shake out the process.
Of course, this year, is a little different for the Las Vegas Raiders. They own the No. 1 overall pick in the April draft and they need a quarterback.
There is only one quarterback prospect who is in the conversation to be the No. 1 pick overall —- Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza. So, the entire draft process may be overlooked by some. In short, many people are already assuming Mendoza will be the choice of the Raiders.
What are my thoughts about it?
While the draft process is just starting, it makes sense. Yes, as of now, on January 21 (92 days before the draft), I think Mendoza should be the Raiders’ pick.
Is he a perfect prospect? No, probably not.
But he put together a great season (and he was pretty good at Cal in 20204, too). He checks a lot of boxes in terms of character, intelligence and total makeup that he is worth the pick.
There are few sure things when it comes to quarterback draft prospects and there are a lot of busts at the position. So, there is some risks at play, but the Raiders need to take a shot at findings their franchise quarterback and Mendoza certainly has a chance to become that player.
The purgatory at the position has been going on for far to too long for the Silver and Black.
They need to take a crack at it and Mendoza is worth taking the chance. Yes, we will be hearing some positives and some criticisms about Mendoza in the next three months. We may even here some trade rumors.
So, the process is far from over. But right now, Mendoza should be the choice and the Raiders should feel good about it.
