Frenkie de Jong is nearing a return to action. After suffering an injury that has kept him from playing for Barcelona this season, the midfielder is back in training. However, his time at Barça could be limited.
A new report says Barcelona are leaning towards selling him, looking to cash in and generate funds and space within Financial Fair Play rules to make signings, potentially as soon as the winter transfer window.
The report does not claim that Barcelona have decided they are selling him. And
it’s not the first time De Jong has been linked with an exit over the years, only for the player to remain.
But there are reasons to believe a transfer could take place. With Pedri, Marc Bernal, Gavi, and the recent arrival of Rodri Hernández, Barcelona have a lot of players looking for minutes in the central midfield spots. There are whispers that the top brass at Can Barça were not impressed with De Jong continuing to play for the Netherlands in the FIFA World Cup after, he has openly admitted, he was already injured.
The Catalans have needs in a couple different positions, mostly at centerback and striker. If they want to make a signing, they will have to sell. And if they want a big signing, then they need a big sale. A €65 million price tag for De Jong has been rumored in the press.
De Jong has a contract until 2029, signed last year. He will not go unless, first, the club decides to move him on, a suitor matches the asking price, and finally, the player himself agrees to exit.
