Newcastle United players are about to discover who will be elevated into the club’s leadership group as a new vice-captain, according to Daily Mail’s Craig Hope.
“Newcastle’s players are set to learn on
Friday who has been promoted to the role of vice-captain,” Hope wrote.
The vacancy was created by Callum Wilson’s departure, leaving Jamaal Lascelles as club captain and Bruno Guimaraes serving as the de facto skipper, supported by existing vice-captains Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy and Kieran Trippier.
Eddie Howe is overseeing a democratic process.
“Each player [gets] a 1, 2, 3 vote on their choice of team-mate to join the group,” Hope explained. “It has been the chatter of the training ground in recent days as to who will win the coveted spot.”
According to Hope, “the exit polls would suggest that the new vice-captain will come from a shortlist of Fabian Schar, Joelinton, Nick Pope and Sandro Tonali.”
Hope joked about Howe’s role in the ballot process.
“It is thought that Howe spent all day Thursday emptying ballot boxes and counting the votes… (that is a joke, btw),” Hope wrote.
Joke or not, odds are Hope-favorite Nick Pope earns the nod, solidifies his role in the locker room, and cuts short any of watching Aaron Ramsdale get reps in important games. Alas.
The result is expected to be confirmed before the weekend game against Arsenal, with Howe keen to strengthen the leadership unit following a turbulent start to the season, and the announcement expected at some point on Friday or Saturday.
