The Miami Hurricanes demolished the FAMU Rattlers tonight at Hard Rock Stadium, 77-7. Miami’s defense didn’t give up a point. Miami’s offense looked incredible all night long. In an obvious tuneup game, the Canes did not disappoint.
Let’s get to the three stars of the game.
1. Darian Mensah
Miami’s signal caller now has eight touchdown passes and four incompletions on the season. Not bad. I have to say I enjoy watching Mensah at least as much as I did Cam Ward so far. The dude is so smooth. His two runs were nonchalant,
while getting first downs. His throws were pinpoint accurate..again. I can’t wait for next week against Wake Forest for his second conference game as a Hurricane. Oh, his stat line: 14-15, 252 yards, 3 touchdowns, two rushes for 21 yards.
2. Malachi Toney
The best overall player in college football had a relatively quiet game by his standards. And by quiet, I mean four catches for 96 yards, one touchdown, and a highlight-reel catch. Just another game for Malachi Toney. I am going to record the Wake Forest Purdue game and watch it later on. I want to see the Demon Deacons’ secondary. Call me crazy, but I think Toney could be in for another big game next Friday night.
3. The Defense
Let’s get the bad part out of the way: Miami’s defense hasn’t forced a turnover this season. The good part is they get off the field and force a million punts. I’ll take it. Guys were flying all over the field tonight. Blount, Moten, Lightfoot, Toure, Wiley, Dunnigan, O’Connor, Fitzgerald, and Scroggins were just some of the guys that made an impact. FAMU did not score on offense, went 1-14 on third down, and only had 107 yards of total offense. Just an all-around solid effort from Corey Hetherman’s unit.
Honorable mention:
Luke Nickel – Miami’s backup QB made the most of his time tonight. Nickel went 8-8 for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns, plus one rush for 13 yards. The competition was lesser than, but he looked good nonetheless.
Vance Spafford – The freshman’s touchdown catch should be on SC Top Ten plays this week. He finished with three catches for 53 yards.
Javian Mallory – The comparisons to a young Frank Gore are more legitimate by the day. Mallory is a shifty, strong, fast freak. He ended up leading the team in rushing tonight with 10 carries for 142 yard and two TDs.
