There is officially less than a month to go, although that depends what you are most looking forward to. The Dallas Cowboys are set to report to training camp in Oxnard, California on July 28th, but the team’s first practice on the west coast will not take place until a day later. Ultimately, there is a month go in an approximate sense.
When things get going at training camp we will be paying attention to all of the storylines, but certain ones will naturally rise to the top due to their level of importance
with respect to the team at large. While this is the case there are always stories that slip through the cracks, and that is what we are here today to discuss.
Getting more specific, today we are here to talk about the most overlooked storyline entering training camp.
The Cowboys don’t really have a left tackle
Obviously the Cowboys have a left tackle on their two-deep depth chart right now: Tyler Guyton. The team’s first-round pick in 2024, if someone told you the night he was selected that two years later we’d be at the very least entertaining questions about who is starting at his position then you likely would have said that things were a failure early on.
And to be clear, it is hardly breaking news to anyone that the left tackle position has a question mark next to it right now on the aforementioned two-deep. The thing that makes this overlooked is the level of importance that surrounds the spot. Left tackle is one of the “money five” positions in the NFL, it is on some level an extension of the quarterback position which is the most important, and with a month to go until camp there is not a certainty on who is going to man it.
To their credit, the Cowboys have effectively announced that they are aware of the ongoing debate at the position. Brian Schottenheimer said recently that Guyton is in a roster battle with Nate Thomas for the role. Dak Prescott added that they are each giving it a full effort.
This isn’t just some ordinary roster spot up for grabs, though. As our own LP Cruz opined, whoever wins it helps mold the overall composition of the Cowboys roster. This is the most overlooked storyline not because it is hiding in plain sight, but because it is the center of the universe that everything depends on to a high degree and it is not stable enough for things to orbit around it right now.
Sometimes the answer to questions like these is the most obvious thing which is the case here. The Cowboys don’t really have a left tackle at the moment, and that is a panic-inducing sort of statement. You can’t sort of have a left tackle and that’s the territory that this team floats in. Once more, they are clearly building towards a future and look like a team that is going to utilize the summer days to find an appropriate answer, but when they touch down in Oxnard there is zero doubt that this is the most prevalent question for them to answer.
Do you agree, though? Or is there another storyline that you feel like is more overlooked, even if it is overlooked in a different sort of way?
