Triple-A: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Yankees) 5, Norfolk Tides 2 — 7 inn.
The Tides and RailRiders were supposed to play a doubleheader, but only one game got played before rain swept through again to wash out the finale. The opener was going pretty well for the Tides, who carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh and final inning, but reliever Hans Crouse coughed up a walkoff grand slam to Scranton’s Jonathan Ornelas. Welp.
Before that, starter Nestor German pitched very well, working five scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no walks. It was just his second
scoreless outing in 17 appearances this year. A rehabbing Yaramil Hiraldo coughed up a solo homer in the sixth to former Orioles minor leaguer J.C. Escarra.
The Norfolk offense produced only three hits in the game, including a Heston Kjerstad double and an Enrique Bradfield Jr. single. Both of their runs scored on fielder’s choices. Exciting stuff.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 2, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets) 0
It was a great day for four Baysox pitchers, who combined to toss Chesapeake’s fourth shutout of the season. Lefty prospect Luis De León dazzled with 5.2 scoreless innings of one-hit ball, striking out nine and walking three. Alex Pham, Richard Guasch, and Gerald Ogando each followed with a scoreless, hitless inning to complete the masterpiece.
The Baysox, just like the Tides, managed only two runs and three hits, but in their case that was good enough to win. The #1 and #2 hitters, Frederick Bencosme and Ethan Anderson, each had a single and a walk, and Griff O’Ferrall added the other hit. One run scored on a Thomas Sosa sac fly and the other on a wild pitch.
High-A: Frederick Keys 2, Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets) 2 — suspended in 8th
The Keys and Cyclones were in the middle of a tight game when weather intervened and forced a suspension in the eighth inning in Frederick. The Keys had the potential go-ahead run at third with two outs and Wehiwa Aloy at the plate when play was called. They’ll resume the game sometime during the two clubs’ series in Brooklyn from Sep. 1-6.
Lefty Caden Hunter delivered a quality start for Frederick, giving up just one run in six innings and striking out five. Meanwhile, the Keys scored both their runs in the second inning. Randal Diaz, acquired last week from the Nationals, ripped an RBI single and scored on a Braylin Tavera double. That came against veteran major leaguer Robert Stock, who’s on a rehab assignment for the Mets. Aloy was 1-for-3 and Ike Irish was 0-for-3 with a walk.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 2, Charleston RiverDogs (Rays) 0
The Shorebirds were the second O’s affiliate to win a 2-0 game on this night. This was Delmarva’s third of the season. Theirs was a three-pitcher effort, led by starter Christian Rodriguez, who pitched 5.2 innings, struck out six, and gave up just one hit. After that, Trent Turzenski worked 1.1 scoreless innings and Jack Crowder handled the final two for his second save.
Of Delmarva’s six hits, Jordan Sanchez and Cobb Hightower had two apiece. Sanchez’s RBI single in the third plated one run and a RiverDogs error brought in the other.
