After taking down Ball State 56-3 to open the season, all eyes turn to Austin, Texas, as the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes head to primetime to take on the No. 4 Texas Longhorns. Here are five things to know about Texas to get ready for the game.
Cam Coleman joins the offense
One issue last season for Texas was the weapons Arch Manning was throwing to. Parker Livingston was a freshman, and Ryan Wingo was hurt for a lot of the season. They addressed that this season by bringing in one of the best pass catchers in the country, Cam Coleman
from Auburn.
Last year for Auburn, Coleman was the offense, catching 56 passes for 708 yards and five touchdowns. In 2024 as a freshman, Coleman caught 37 passes for 598 yards and eight touchdowns.
Last week against Texas State, he had three catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns. It will take a full defensive effort to slow him down Saturday.
Steve Sarkisian made a big coaching move this offseason
The Longhorns fired their defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski after last season and hired a familiar name for college football fans, Will Muschamp.
Muschamp is automatically one of the best coordinators in the country. He has deep SEC coaching ties and used to be the head coach at Florida and South Carolina and defensive coordinator for LSU, Auburn, Texas, Auburn again, and Georgia.
Both teams are top five in all-time wins
It is not a secret that Ohio State and Texas are two of the biggest brands and programs in the country, but Ohio State is second all-time in wins with 991, while Texas is tied for fourth with 972. Michigan is No. 1 with 1,022. Alabama is third with 985, while Notre Dame is fourth with Texas at 972. Also, Ohio State leads all time with a .737 winning percentage (991-337-53), while Texas is sixth in the FBS ranks at .705 (972-398-33).
Albino Squirrels are a good luck charm
According to Campus legend, if a Texas student spots one of the rare albino squirrels on the way to an exam, it means they will ace the test. I don’t know if that translates to the football field, though.
Before Bevo was Pig Belmont
As we all know now, Bevo is the iconic Texas mascot. However, before Bevo, the first football mascot was a dog named Pig Belmont who roamed campus and attended classes before receiving a formal campus funeral. He served as the Longhorns’ first live mascot from 1914 to 1923.
