Former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champ Jon Jones is speaking out after footage of an alleged road rage incident surfaced on social media over Easter weekend.
The video showed Jones getting out of his truck in a parking lot and approaching a man who accused the fighter of nearly running him off the road several times. Jones kept one hand conspicuously in his hoodie pocket, with the video caption suggesting he was “most likely packing a gun.”
“You gotta calm down, bro, you gotta relax yourself,
bro,” Jones said before sticking his middle finger into the man’s camera phone and walking back to his truck.
The other driver, Bryan Beltran, claimed he was “Driving up Central close to Eubank, when I was almost hit 3 times by the truck, even after I revved my car at him the first time it almost happened, he still almost hit me twice after that, so I flipped him off, then he proceeded to stop in the middle of the road back up and come into the same parking lot.”
Jones has now shared his side of the story on X (formerly Twitter).
“This kid proceeded to chase my car down for two blocks, revving his engine and trying to intimidate me,” Jones tweeted. “I am glad this happened to me and not one of the senior citizens in our community. I am proud of myself for standing up for myself and not allowing that kind of bullying or intimidation.”
Who was in the right and who was in the wrong? Without complete camera footage of the entire event, it’s impossible to tell. Should Jones be confronting people while at the very least pretending to have a gun in his pocket? We’d suggest this is a good way to end up getting charged with negligent use of a firearm again, like he did in March 2020.
Jones’ fighting career is currently in limbo following a failed bid to fight Alex Pereira at the White House. He’s since asked the UFC to release him from his contract, but they have not responded.
