Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has spoken about the emotional return of former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold to Anfield, as the right-back prepares to face his old club in Real Madrid colors in tomorrow
night’s Champions League clash — though, due to his health, may not appear in the match at all.
Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid last summer in one of the most shocking transfers of recent years, will be at Anfield for the first time as an opposing player — an occasion that is certain to stir a mix of emotions among Liverpool supporters.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the highly anticipated fixture, Van Dijk admitted he hasn’t had much personal contact with his former teammate since the move, but praised the Englishman’s quality and impact during his years at Liverpool.
“I have not spoken to him much, no. Nothing personal whatsoever. Obviously I live my life and he lives his life in Madrid,” Van Dijk said.
“I think Trent is a quality player. He showed it so many times. He’s a very gifted player and he was important for us all those years. I was very happy to have him in my team and we have been very successful. But now he’s an opponent on Tuesday. If he plays then we have to make it very difficult for him to do what he’s good at.”
Alexander-Arnold lifted the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup with the club before sealing a move to Madrid. Though he has not featured much due to injury, he will no doubt be an important player in Xabi Alonso’s system.
Asked whether he expects the right-back to receive a hostile reception upon his return, Van Dijk was diplomatic:
“Will he receive a hostile reception? I’m not going to comment on that. I think he’s been outstanding in his time at Liverpool.”
