The Los Angeles Rams continue to have uncertainty at backup quarterback, and should consider trading for Texans QB2 Davis Mills. Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton suggested Mills to the Rams as a trade the team should consider to fill their biggest weakness.
Moton wrote that Mills could “upgrade” the backup QB situation behind Matthew Stafford:
“General manager Les Snead should call the Houston Texans to inquire about Davis Mills, who went 3-0 as a fill-in starter for C.J. Stroud last season.
Of course, Houston
values Mills’ ability to lead its offense in case Stroud gets banged up again, but the 27-year-old is entering a contract year. The Texans may be willing to deal him now, before he hits free agency and they ramp up talks for Stroud’s extension next offseason.”
Mills is one of the top backup signal callers in the league. As Moton said, the veteran went 3-0 filling in for Stroud last season, finishing with a 5-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, 915 passing yards and an 81.6 passer rating. Nothing spectacular by any means, but he did enough to keep Houston from completely falling out of the playoff picture.
During that stretch, Mills led a season-saving comeback win over the Jaguars in Week 10. The Texans were 3-5 entering the game and fell behind 29-10 before scoring 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Mills accounted for three total touchdowns, including a 14-yard scramble that capped off the stunning comeback.
That marked the beginning of the Texans’ 10-game winning streak to finish the season, which ended in the Divisional Round. The Stanford product was primarily Houston’s full-time starter from 2021-22. At that time, the Texans had one of the NFL’s worst rosters, so Mills never had a chance at succeeding long-term.
However, he’s been Stroud’s backup since the former Ohio State star entered the league in 2023. Houston has trusted him enough with the keys to the offense in the last three seasons. He has proven to be serviceable to keep the Texans afloat if needed. The Rams would be wise to give them a call, as they focus on extending Stroud.
Simply put, Los Angeles needs a proven QB2 behind Stafford if Jimmy Garoppolo goes elsewhere. Trading for Mills might be the ideal upgrade at the position for the Rams to help fill their most glaring remaining weakness.
