The Yankees’ struggles against the AL East continued on Friday night with another loss to the Blue Jays. Cam Schlittler probably threw the worst start of his big league career so far, but even if he had been excellent, the Yankees might’ve lost anyway thanks to the offense doing not much against Jays ace Kevin Gausman. Thanks to the defeat, the Yankees sit four games back of Toronto in the AL East, and really need to get a move on if they do want to rally past the Jays for the division crown — a longshot
at this point at only 14.8-percent FanGraphs AL East odds.
To try and get going on a good run, the Yankees will send Luis Gil to the mound on Saturday afternoon. Ever since struggling in his season debut, Gil has been very solid, posting a 2.42 ERA and a 3.87 FIP in the five games since. He hasn’t provided a ton of length — as you might expect from someone coming back from injury — although the Yankees didn’t use the bullpen too heavily yesterday, despite Schlittler’s struggles.
As for the Blue Jays, Chris Bassitt will get the ball. The Yankees’ offense has gotten to him in their games against him this year (4.82 ERA), although the team has only actually won one of the three games.
