After opening as a 34.5-point favorite, BYU is now up to a massive 44.5-point favorite vs FCS foe Portland State, according to FanDuel odds. The line has gone up in BYU’s favor since PSU’s 42-0 home loss on Saturday to Tarleton State. Tarleton State is a top 10 FCS team, but hitting the road at BYU is a huge step up in competition.
Below I pick BYU’s and other top Big 12 games in week one. As a reminder, “-” means a team is favored and “+” means they are an underdog.
BYU (-44.5) vs Portland State
BYU
is going to win. The question is by how much. The Vikings are a bottom tier FCS team and their opening game didn’t give much hope that they can keep this close. Kalani Sitake has a tendency to not run up the score, but BYU does have precedence of blowing out FCS team. BYU beat North Alabama 66-14 (52 points) in 2020 and Idaho State 59-14 (45 points) in 2021. BYU will want to give Bear Bachmeier reps, which should mean the offense keeps the foot on the gas longer. I’ll take BYU to cover the points.
Prediction: BYU covers — BYU 52, Portland State 3
Baylor (+2.5) vs Auburn
Baylor-Auburn Friday night in Waco is one of the sneaky good week one games. The Bears are slight home underdogs to an Auburn team who has good offensive weapons. Baylor returns QB Sawyer Robertson, who I think could end up being the best QB in the Big 12. Hugh Freeze doesn’t seem totally bought into being at Auburn, and a week one loss could turn up the heat on his seat. I’ll take the Bears and Sawyer Robertson as home dogs.
Prediction: Baylor Covers — Baylor 30, Auburn 28
UCLA (+5.5) vs Utah
BYU fans can tune into this nightcap on Saturday night for a late 8pm PT start. Both team break in new QBs, with Utah rolling out Devon Dampier and UCLA bring in Tennessee transfer Nico Iamaleava. I have questions about how Utah’s wideouts and how well they will work with Dampier to form a competent passing. Utah’s offensive line, however, is the best in the Big 12 and one of the best in the country. I think that unit opens up enough in the running game for Utah to win, although I’ll pick UCLA to cover.
Prediction: UCLA Covers — Utah 24, UCLA 20
North Carolina (+3.5) vs TCU
Bill Belichick’s highly anticipated debut is one of the biggest stories of the opening weekend. No one really has any idea how good UNC will look with a completely rehauled roster. TCU, meanwhile, returns 4,000-yard passer Josh Hoover from an offense that should be able to put up points. TCU is getting little preseason love, but they are a sleeper to win the Big 12. I’ll pick TCU to win and cover the spread as 3.5 point favorites.
Prediction: TCU covers — TCU 31, UNC 20
