When we thought about doing World Series stuff during the World Series, we were thinking about highlighting historic plays. We didn’t necessarily expect to see one live.
That was the case on Monday night
though as the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays had an epic game with an equally epic conclusion.
Tuesday’s Game3 went to 18 innings. It wasn’t exactly what Ernie Banks meant when he said “it’s a great day for a ballgame. Let’s play two,” but close enough.
The longest game in World Series history went until nearly 2:30 EST and didn’t end until Freddie Freeman nailed a walk-off homer to give the Dodgers a 6-5 win.
Baseball has lost some of its luster over the years, mostly by its own institutional stupidity. Canceling the World Series in 1994 was a disgusting betrayal, led by putsch-installed commissioner Bud Selig. At its heart though, baseball is a duel between pitcher and hitter and the fielders aren’t involved until the hitter invites them to the fray.
Or, as Freeman did, disinvites them with a game-ending play. What an amazing game, what an amazing play.
