This is old news, but it was new to me.
Last night Memphis made their first trip of the season to San Antonio in search of the thirteenth straight win on the Spurs court. They left disappointed after what turned out to be the scrappiest game the Spurs have participated in this season.
During the telecast, I noticed Jaren Jackson, Jr. was wearing number 8. I was perplexed as I thought he wore number 13. A quick search during a commercial break yielded the information that he changed his number this
past summer when he signed his new contract.
The number change represented a new beginning and a shift in his discipline as he elevated his commitment to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Jackson, Jr. had worn number 13 during his first seven seasons, all with the Grizzlies since begin drafted fourth overall in 2018.
His new number, 8, was previously worn during his appearance in the 2017 McDonalds’ All-American competition. But more importantly, it was worn by his father.
Jaren Jackson, Sr. wore number 8 during the 1992-93 season as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers.
The elder Jackson was best known for being a member of the Spurs from 1997-2001, his only multi-year team over his thirteen year journeyman career.
San Antonio is where he won his lone title as a member of the Spurs 1999 title team.
This summer, his son signed a 5-year, $240M extension, enough to keep him in Memphis through the 2029-2030 season.
