As reported by The Athletic, among many many others, Manchester City have been found guilty on 114 of the 115 charges levied against them by the Premier League pertaining to financial transactions between 2009 and 2018.
The league’s investigation began nearly eight years ago this point, with the charges brought against the decade’s dominant club in 2023. Since then, the whole 115 thing had become a bit of a meme as we all waited for the outcome. In a way, the guilty verdict is almost a surprise at this point —
though it’s only on 114 of the 115 charges!
No sanctions have been decided yet (points, fines, bans all on the table still) and City are of course expected to appeal the decision in the first place, so this may yet drag on for a good long while yet.
Similarly to some of Chelsea’s recent charges, City are accused of not reporting accurate financial information regarding transfers and payments, to avoid breaching PSR and FFP rules in England and Europe. Unlike Chelsea’s case, City’s were not self-reported and at least from the outside, they’ve been far less cooperative with the league. Chelsea were able to settle for a slap on the wrist (10m fine); so we’ll see if City can get away with things just as lightly.
