Bayern Munich’s high-octane 4-3 victory over Real Madrid is the talk of the town for all the right and wrong reasons. Europe’s brightest footballing talents shone, while match officiates threatened to destroy the high-stakes encounter — a common occurrence that Bayern often fall victim to when they lock horns with Madrid.
This time around, not even sketchy officiating could get in the way of Vincent Kompany’s red machine. Antonio Rüdiger was particularly sour with match officials following the defeat
and believes they are responsible for sealing his side’s Champions League Quarter-final exit.
“You saw the situations yourself,” said a visibly frustrated Rüdiger as he stormed past reporters (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “It’s better not to speak.”
Rüdiger upset with officials? How about the Brahim Díaz’s Oscar-worthy dive subsequently leading to a free-kick goal for Madrid? Or what about the Rüdiger’s blatant body-check on Josip Stanišić in the build-up to Kylian Mbappé‘s goal? What a laughable reaction from a player that could have easily seen a red card himself for repeated offenses, that conveniently went unpunished.
As a player that has just endured a devastating loss, Rüdiger’s reaction is understandable. But, it’s also an example of how accustomed Madrid have become to decisions going their way, never batting an eye when those decisions themselves were incorrect.
The match officiates did a terrible job around the board. Both Bayern and Madrid will be far from impressed. But, the difference is this: poor officiating directly cost Bayern two goals.
