Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson revealed before the Premier League game against Burnley that the Magpies have the means to strengthen the squad in January, while contract talks continue
with Tino Livramento and Sven Botman.
Wilson, who arrived in October, has spent his first weeks auditing the squad’s contractual landscape and assessing potential mid-season business.
Wilson said discussions with Eddie Howe have so far focused on evaluating the current group rather than specific incoming targets.
“Basically, where we’re at right now is that Eddie and I haven’t spoken about what January looks like in terms of incomings,” Wilson said. “What we’ve talked about is what the thoughts are about the squad right now. Where’s his head at with the squad we’ve already got? How does that look? How does he feel about that, the shape, the size of it? Individuals? That’s what we’ve spoken about up to now.”
Even so, he confirmed the club have PSR room to operate.
“Can we spend in January? Yes. If we want to, we can,” Wilson said. “We’re not going to do that again in the winter window as well, for a variety of reasons. But if we want to spend, we can. Of course, we’ll be creative, of course we’ll be opportunistic as well.”
Wilson said recruitment work remains active, though any January move must fit the wider 2026 squad plan.
“Probably the most important thing is that it would have to align with what the summer plan looks like,” Wilson said.
Talks to extend Livramento and Botman are underway.
“It’s no secret at all that we would want to extend Tino’s contract and we would want to extend Sven Botman’s contract too,” Wilson said. “Those discussions are ongoing… Will they agree those contracts? At the moment, I think it’s too early to say.”
