Manchester United is poised to add Atalanta’s Ederson to its engine room according to a new report from David Ornstein of The Athletic. Ornstein reports the deal is for €40.5million which can grow to €45m if parameters are reached. The Brazilian midfielder is set for a medical and official announcement next month.
The 26-year-old, who will turn 27 on July 7, agreed to a four-plus-one contract that could see him play at Old Trafford through the 2030-31 season.
Ederson’s arrival represents an injection
of energy into the United midfield. Drawing comparisons to United cult hero, Fred, Ederson possesses the stamina and pace to adequately cover the box-to-box role. Newly-minted head coach Michael Carrick will look to Ederson to provide the athleticism lacking in Casemiro’s twilight and Manuel Ugarte’s overall profile.
Statman Dave’s analysis of Ederson is positive, albeit slightly marred because of the reported transfer fee for a player who could be signed on a free next summer. Like last summer’s signings, Ederson is thought to be an incredibly solid player that should raise the floor of United’s midfield potential. He is praised most for his consistency which will be critical for the club’s return to the UEFA Champions League where they will need both talent and depth to make a worthwhile run.
A player for Atalanta since the 2022-23 season, Ederson’s greatest achievement with the club was playing all 90 minutes in the 2024 UEFA Europa League Final that saw Atalanta dismantle Bayer Leverkusen’s invincible season with a 3-0 scoreline. The club also finished as runners-up in the 2023-24 Coppa Italia and made it to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 this past season.
Ederson made 180 appearances in a possible 202 matches for Atalanta across his four seasons. He scored 16 goals and assisted seven more in that time.
The timing of the report — 366 days after the announcement of Matheus Cunha’s transfer — continues the refreshing initiative from the new United recruiting team of getting a deal done at the opening of the transfer window. With the FIFA World Cup 2026 set to kick off in eight days, it would not be surprising if there is a perceived lack of activity until next month. However, at least one more of Ederson’s countrymen is a reported target of United’s and will not feature for the Brazilian squad, opening up an opportunity to get another deal over the line well ahead of the club’s first pre-season fixture on July 18 against Wrexham.
