One of the New Orleans Saints’ needs this offseason is at running back. Alvin Kamara is nearing the end of his career and is coming off a disappointing season; Kendre Miller has been unable to have a healthy season; Devin Neal is a bit of an unknown commodity; and Audric Estime is a good depth piece. If the Saints want to have success in 2026, the RB position needs to be addressed. This could be a short-term fix or a long-term fix.
This offseason, RB is a need for many teams, and most of the top options
are out of the Saints’ reach because their previous teams already brought them back or because the odds of them dropping in the draft have become much lower. The Saints are already running out of directions to take, but one may have just hit the market. Per Jeremy Fowler, Lions RB David Montgomery may want out of Detroit.
If this rumor is true, another RB option for the Saints is available. Turning 29 before the season starts, Montgomery is an older direction New Orleans could go in, but he has been very consistent throughout his career. He may not be the height of some of the best RBs, but he can also lead a rushing attack. Montgomery’s contract is also not too expensive, and the two-year deal allows the Saints to get out of it after next season if it does not work out.
Now, the next focus has to be on what it could cost. Also, with the rumor, the potential price was revealed to be a day-3 pick, around a 5th-rounder. If that is the true price, and it could even be a bit cheaper, the Saints could easily make the trade happen for a short-term fix in the RB room. Also, if Kamara does bounce back and play at a higher level, he would complement Montgomery really well.
